Nurse Preceptor Incentive Program (NPIP)

Overview

Virginia expects a shortage of over 20,000 nurses in the next decade, mainly due to limited clinical training capacity, not classroom seats. Every nursing student needs experienced clinicians as preceptors to gain hands-on experience. The Virginia Nurse Preceptor Incentive Program offers financial incentives to licensed health professionals who serve as preceptors for nursing students at approved schools. Priority will be given to preceptors who are expanding clinical education opportunities, especially in psychiatry and anesthesiology.

Your incentive is based on the total clinical hours you precept in a semester. The student's nursing school must verify these hours. The range of hours offer a fixed payment; you will receive the full amount for the range your hours fall into, not a per-hour rate (chart below). The most you can earn in a semester is $5,000, reached at 206-250 hours. Fewer than 25 hours in a semester does not qualify.

Eligibility

  1. Serve as preceptors for nursing students.
  2. Hold a current, valid, and unrestricted Virginia license as a physician (MD or DO), physician assistant, advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), registered nurse (RN), or licensed practical nurse (LPN).
  3. Be licensed at or above the level for which the student is preparing (for example, an LPN may precept LPN students only).
  4. Work with students enrolled in a Virginia public or private nonprofit school of nursing.
  5. Clinical rotations have been certified by the School of Nursing.
  6. Have a valid Social Security Number.
  7. Have resided in Virginia for at least one year with valid verification. (The ID address must match the application address.)
